Pastoral Support Group

About

The Congregation at the Extraordinary Congregational Meeting of 26th Oct 2014 resolved that By the expiration of the tenure of the Assistant Chaplain, the Chapel Council should appoint only one Chaplain to be assisted by the Fellowship of Ministers and a team of laymen called Ëlders Forum”.

Council at its meeting of Sunday 25th Oct 2015 deliberated on the proposal put before her on the above subject and resolved as follows:

1. Name of the Body (Elders Forum”)
Council observed that the Body should not be called Elders Form as we have in many churches and resolved that the Body should be called Pastoral Support Group (PSG).

2. Membership
Council resolved that:

  a. The Pastoral Support Group should consist of six Lay members of the Chapel congregation who must be:

  • i.  individuals of obvious spiritual quality and leadership

  • ii.  mature believers, with sound judgement

  • iii.  people with proven record of integrity and accomplishment as believers and such individuals should meet the qualifications in Titus 1:6 (blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination). This does not in any way preclude women from being represented in the group as long as they meet the conditions (i) – (iii) above.

  b. Council decided on membership of six so that there could be a minimum of two members assisting the chaplain during any Sunday service. Arrangements can be made in such a way that the same set of members do not have to officiate at every service.

  c. The constitution of the PSG shall be based on spirituality as well as maturity of the members in the faith and not on age.

  d. Since the PSG cannot be considered as any other committee of the chapel, due to the sensitivity of the spiritual assignment it would be handling, Council resolved that the membership should not be constituted on the basis of representations of fellowships and units in the Chapel, rather, members should be appointed by the Council based on recommendation of the Chaplain and the Chapel Board of Trustee.

  e. Members of the PSG would serve for a term of two years renewable once (subject to satisfactory performance) to make a maximum of four (4) years at a time. Individuals may however be brought back after a break of not less than a period of a term.

  f. Members should be volunteers, that is, people who are willing to serve without the expectation of any form of remuneration from the Chapel.

3. Functions

Council resolved that the PSG in conjunction with the Fellowship of Ministers should assist the Chaplain in his performance of duties. Specifically, they should offer assistance in the following ways:
a. Provide spiritual leadership for the Chapel
b. Provide pastoral leadership and
c. Provide organizational leadership

Specifically, they are to assist the Chaplain in rendering the following services:

i. Conduct worship services
ii. Preach during the services
iii. Offer prayer for the congregation
iv. Serve the Holy Communion
v. Offer counselling to members
vi. Make announcements and
vii. Perform any other functions that Chaplain may assign them.
