Good News Fellowship

Chapel Youth Fellowship

History

There were certain women whom Jesus had done so much for and who were not comfortable not doing anything for Jesus. They were women who were well to do and high in society. Yet they humbled themselves and ministered unto Jesus. It was a revelation to find that the ministry of Jesus was sponsored by women. One of the founding scriptures of the Good News Fellowship is Luke 8:1-3 which specifically says that: “And it came to pass, afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and showing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God and the twelve were with Him; and certain women which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities. Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward and Suzanna and many others ministered unto Him of their substance.”

At a point in the life of All Souls’ Chapel, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where several Young Women who had grown up in the University and gotten married there. There seemed to be a generational gap between these young women and their ‘mothers’ who were in the Women’s Fellowship of the Church. These young women had a lot of respect for their mothers but wanted an avenue to reach in programmes different from what their mothers were doing. They wanted another arm to reach out to younger families like themselves and also an avenue to reach out to villages around, carrying the good news to the villages like Jesus did. In the Year 1990. A few of these women began to talk to one another privately till it became a passion for them. They began to meet to pray, encourage one another and to fellowship. After a few meetings, the women met with the Chaplain, who encouraged us tremendously and gave us the backing to start, the principle is that what we saw in the word we practiced.

The Fellowship started meeting in each of the houses of the members and quickly grew as we started outreach to two villages (Kajola and Agbogbo) outside the Teaching and Research Farm of the Obafemi Awolowo University. Some of our foundation activities included:

1. Supporting the Chaplain in every way we could.
2. Reaching out to people in the villages;
3. Identifying and talking to other youn families like others in the Church; and
4. Identification of members whose husbands were not coming to church so the Chaplain could visit and pray along with them.

A daughter of one of the Fellowship members helped us to compose an anthem that depicted our vision and mission. The vision has become more relevant today as the end of times comes closer and closer. The Fellowship’s vision if the heartbeat of God as seen by the charge of Jesus saying “Go into all nations and preach the Good News”.

At present the Fellowship meetings take place on the Church or in members’ houses every Thursday at 4.30 pm prompt. Our programmes include fasting and prayers, bible study. Visitation/evangelism, praise and worship and testimonies. We also have the health talk and outreach to secondary schools as part of our programmes. The Fellowship stared publishing a biannual magazine titled “Echoes of Good News in the Year 2009. The Fellowship is forging ahead in spite of the challenges facing the Church locally and globally. The vision of the Fellowship will be renewed in our hearts on a daily basis in Jesus Name.
